Mammoth Rocks

The rocks in this video are called Mammoth Rocks. They are located on the Sonoma Coast just south of Goat Rock State Beach. These tall rocks stand out against the flat coastal plain and can be seen from quite a distance. Some sections of the rocks have mysterious smoothed, almost polished, surfaces that are not consistent with normal erosion and scientists believe these surfaces were created when mammoths rubbed on the rocks.

Polished by a mammoth?

The polished spots on the Mammoth Rocks are as high as 14 feet, the same height as the Mammothus columbi that roamed North America back during the Pleistocene Age

Mammoth Rocks Location

Park in the Shell Beach parking lot and walk north on the Kortum trail to reach Mammoth Rocks
